Oregon Black Pioneers Exhibit Opening

Gallery Opening
January 15, 2025 (exhibit will run through February 28)
5 – 7PM
FREE

The public is invited to attend an “opening night” event this January 15th, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Harano Gallery at the Four Rivers Cultural Center and Museum, 676 S.W. Fifth Ave. Light drinks will be served on opening night.

Between 1840 and 1870, Oregon’s provisional and territorial governments passed laws excluding Black people from rights afforded to white settlers. Despite this, a small number of Black Americans settled or remained in Oregon, challenging the discriminatory laws and laying the foundation for the state’s future Black communities. This exhibit highlights some of those Black pioneers who risked everything to build a better life for themselves and their families in Oregon.
