Mexican Independence Day Celebration

El Grito every 16th of September is the Mexican Fiesta par excellence! On this day Mexicans all over the world celebrate Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule.
As you know, indigenous peoples were the first to inhabit what is now known as Mexico. They created great civilizations such as the Olmec, the Teotihuacan, Maya, Toltec, and of course the most powerful of all, the Aztec Empire.
Please join us for our seventh annual Mexican Independence Day Celebration on Sunday, September 15 from 2:00 – 5:30 PM.
Admission is FREE. From 2:00 – 4:00 we will have arts and crafts, face painting, piñatas, Lotteria and other programs for the whole family to take part in.
From 2:00-5:00 many organizations will be here to provide information and consult with attendees about health insurance, fair housing, education issues, immigration issues, family assistance and more. In attendance will be St. Alphonsus Medical Center, Community In Action, Four Rivers Community School, Department of Human Services, CASA (Community And Shelter Assistance Corporation , Euvalcree, OCDC, OHDC, the 8C school district’s migrant program, TVCC’s HEP program and the Mexican Consulate from Boise. Also in attendance will be Malheur County Child Development Center (MCCDC), Child Welfare, Project Dove, Lifeways, Nyssa Chamber of Commerce, Oregon Rural Action, Catholic Charities, Project Dove, and others. All of these organizations provide services to our local Hispanic population. There will be many arts and crafts tables for young people to entertain themselves with – Lotteria, crepe paper flowers, Mexican flag games and more.
From 4:00-5:00 we will have performances– a Mariachi band and Folkloric dancers and the Mexican Consulate from Boise will provide the Grito, a traditional presentation about Independence Day
Food vendors will be on hand to provide great Mexican entrees. Come join us for a fun family day at Four Rivers Cultural Center. Now a tradition, this event is a welcomed and anticipated yearly event for all to enjoy.
